D-value calculator

Definition of D-value:
The D-value is a technical parameter that indicates the ratio of towing load to drawbar load and is a measure of the stability of the trailer combination. It indicates how much weight can be transferred to the trailer coupling without the trailer becoming unstable and difficult to drive. The value depends on the design and load capacity of the coupling and is specified in kilograms or kN. This value is noted on the type plate of all our towbars.

Simplified:
You need the D value and the gross vehicle weight rating of your towing vehicle (tractor) to be able to calculate the maximum total trailer weight you are allowed to tow with this combination, including payload.

Where can you find the documents on your vehicle registration certificate?

Registration certificate part I
The towing capacity in your vehicle registration certificate can be found here under number O.1 or number O.2. The gross weight can also be found in your vehicle registration certificate. Here at number F.1.

Old vehicle registration document
The towing capacity in your vehicle registration document can be found at number 28 or number 29. The gross weight can also be found in your vehicle registration document. Here at number 15.

How to find the D-value

You can find the D-value in our catalog or on the type plate of our trailer coupling.

What else do I need to consider?

Please also take into account

  • that these are theoretically calculated values. The towing vehicle manufacturer may specify lower values for the permissible trailer load of the vehicle for technical reasons.
  • If the D-values of the towing bracket and trailer coupling are different, the lower D-value should be selected.
  • the total mass of the combination of towing vehicle and trailer load must not exceed defined values: Germany 40t

The calculators provided below are used to calculate trailer operation when towing ONE trailer:

Calculation of the Maximum Permissible Trailer Load

When entering the D-value and the permissible gross weight of your towing vehicle, the calculated maximum trailer load must not be exceeded.

These are theoretical calculated values! Information from the vehicle registration documents must be taken into account!

Calculation of the Maximum Permissible Gross Weight of the Towing Vehicle

When entering the D-value and the permissible gross weight of your trailer, the calculated maximum gross weight of your towing vehicle must not be exceeded.
